Soulcraft: an activity that is both fruitful and fulfilling

In our wood shop in Ferguson, MO, we enjoy and are drawn into something greater than ourselves through craftsmanship. As we make things, we learn to make ourselves useful and to bring good to those around us. We’re not just making things, we’re in many ways being remade as we do. Our craft makes things good by drawing attention not only to the way things are but also to the way things will be. The things we build, create, or make in the present become signposts to a future beauty that we might not otherwise hope for.

Every new maker who comes into the woodshop will work on four projects. These four projects mirror our founder’s story. As they move through these four projects, their story is being formed as well. You can think of it as the four legs on the table being set for meaningful conversations that join our stories into one bigger story.

The four projects are intentionally designed to bring good not only to themselves but to others as well. The heart of a Soulcraft Maker is to make things good for themselves and others. When a maker completes all four projects, they are given continued access to the shop to build things that they want to give away, keep for themselves, sell, or help others build.

THE FOUR PROJECTS

  • One to Give

This project will allow our makers to learn some basic woodworking skills and they will be asked to give it away to someone when it’s completed. Soulcraft Makers seek first to bring good to those around them.

  • One to Keep

This project will build on the skills our makers learned in the first project. This is something they will keep for themselves. The desires of a Soulcraft Maker aren’t inherently selfish when the things they desire are conformed to a heart that desires ultimate good.

  • One to Sell

This project will give our makers an opportunity to learn new skills including how to design something. They will be selling this item either in our retail space, farmer’s market, online, or to those in our extended community who are interested in our work. Soulcraft Makers make things of value that are useful and good for others.

  • One to Help

Our makers will invite someone they know into the woodshop and help them make their first project. And so, their story continues to unfold and becomes part of someone else's story. Soulcraft Makers stand alongside others so they too can enjoy the good we all desire. Imagine generations of makers making things good.
